Ergonomics have been systematically developed in Taiwan since 1984. The National Science Council (NSC) invited domestic Ergonomics professionals to consider the future development of this field. After several meetings, the future development of Ergonomics and respective Chinese naming were identified. Since then, Ergonomics became the developmental focus of the engineering and applied sciences department at NSC. During July, 1992, many major professors and researchers from university and institutions across Taiwan set up the Ergonomics Society of Taiwan (EST) in order to integrate the human resource, enhance academic research and related technique applications and promote international interaction. This proposal was supported by the academic, education, and industry communities. On February 14, 1993, the Ergonomics Society of Taiwan was founded at National Tsing-Hua University (Hsin-Chu). More than 160 members attended the inaugural meeting.

Over the past two decades the number of Ergonomic professionals and engineers in Taiwan has gradually increased. There have been satisfactory results and significant growth in academic studies and professional growth each year. The original support by the National Science Council (NSC) and more government agencies such as: the Council of Labor Affairs, Council of Atomic Energy, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Economic Affairs, and many private industries, has increased relevant demand for Ergonomic professionals. Ergonomics (Human factors) project has been listed as one of the five general research topics in the Industrial Engineering and Management Program of the department of engineering and applied sciences for the NSC. Within the scope of the life science department of the NSC, research topics in medical engineering, such as: biomechanics, assistive technology devices and facilities, and rehabilitation and so on, have been requested to have interdisciplinary integration and Ergonomic support. Therefore, Ergonomic professionals have importance, essential function and promising potential in Taiwan’s scientific and technological research endeavors.
At present the trend is visible that more advanced technological developments require considerable demand for Ergonomic engineering. For example, the government is promoting an Aerospace and Satellite developmental project requiring many complicated, accurate control systems. Ergonomic engineering provides professional human-computer (human-machine) interface knowledge for the operating control system to avoid human error, ensure task safety and mission success.

Ergonomics engineering is a scientific discipline involving acute understanding of human abilities, limitations and characteristics applied to relevant designs for tools, machines, systems, task, jobs and environments. The objectives of Ergonomics are concerned with work safety, comfort and humanizing to maximize work efficiency and improve productivity and user satisfaction. From many successful foreign cases, products designed with Ergonomic considerations have higher added–value and greater market competition in industry applications. Some companies improve the human working organization and environment to ensure the physical and physiological health of employees. Consequently, employee cohesion is strengthened toward the company, but increased employee productivity and higher company image also result. For older adults, children and disabled people, Ergonomic designed facilities can make their daily living more convenient, promoting social harmony and realizing social equity. Ergonomics applications can make very valuable contributions in all fields of human endeavor.
This is the era of multi-disciplinary cooperation and interaction. New technology developments are closely linked and inseparable with many professional fields. Ergonomics is a multi-disciplinary science. All ergonomic designs focus on the “human-centered” and emphasize “humanizing” the activity. Technological development, industrial improvement and quality of life are closely related with the “human factors”. The human characteristic is a major consideration. Humans can really enjoy and utilize technology, products, facilities and organizations that are designed with Ergonomic concepts. The greatest contribution and social impact to Ergonomics is always considering the “good/fit to people”. Therefore, the powerful effect of Ergonomics is not limited only to technology and industry, but is closely related to the society, culture, community and individual.
